Of all the causes of bladder infections, one of the most overlooked may be the most obvious

How healthy are you?

In my research into the causes of bladder infections, I have heard about people who:

  • Time themselves having sex to ensure it lasts no longer than 10 minutes (not very romantic!)
  • On constant doses of antibiotics (which is bad for your pocket and your body)
  • Have cut out all sugar including all fruits and vegetables (How can having no fruit and veges be healthy?)

So many of us have gone to extreme lengths to prevent bladder infections, only to keep getting them.

When I first started getting bladder infections I just wanted a quick fix. Then, when that wasn't forthcoming I wanted to find the causes of bladder infections... so I could stop doing whatever it was! But everytime I'd figure out what I thought was "the" cause, I'd be fine for a while and then bang I was back to getting bladder infections.

Then came the slow, dawning of realisation on me that I wasn't a "healthy" person. I've never had to be treated in hospital, never broken a bone, never been seriously ill but I wasn't healthy. Every cold or flu that came along I would get. I was tired all the time, prone to IBS and my moods were all over place.

But most importantly my body couldn't fight off the tiny microscopic bacteria that were the causes of bladder infections. I was walking on eggshells to prevent the infections but not working on making my body stronger to fight them itself.

The more research I have done, the more I have come to be amazed and in awe of how fantastic our bodies are. Think for a moment of all the possible things that could go wrong in your body right from conception through to where you are now. Of all the millions of things that could go wrong – how many have? Things do go wrong all the time, but they go right far more often than wrong.

I know my body has had to put up with a huge amount of crap over it's 29 years. Countless doses of antibiotics and medications, poor nutrition from a bad diet, stress, grief, binge drinking as a teenager, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, lack of love, the list goes on and on. I have met few people who could say that they have none of these vices or any others that affect their health.

When I think about what my body has had to put up with, I am not surprised that it started to stuff up. I am more amazed that it didn't stuff up earlier and much worse than it did.

So while the leading causes of bladder infections may be E coli and Candida and other microscopic organisms, technically they are all the same thing – things assaulting your body which your body has run out of oomph to deal with.

There are so many many things which we all do on a daily basis which take their toll on us. It seems an impossible task to even contemplate how to change that. Which is probably why it took me such a long time to work out what to do.

And the answer for me... Was to make a choice to start treating my body better. How to do that is a journey in itself but it can be learned.

Making the choice to treat yourself well is something only you can decide on.
